Barbara Mintzes

Barbara Mintzes is an Assistant Professor with the Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of British Columbia, and has a Ph.D. in Health Care and Epidemiology from the University of British Columbia. She holds a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar Award, and is a faculty associate with UBC’s Centre for Health Services and Policy Research.

The main focus of Dr Mintzes’ research is on pharmaceutical policy. Dr Mintzes also carries out systematic reviews of the effectiveness and safety of new drugs with UBC’s Therapeutics Initiative. She also contributes to the Therapeutics Initiative’s educational activities and independent bulletin, the Therapeutics Letter.

Dr Mintzes worked with Health Action International (HAI)’s European office as a staff member from 1991 to 1996, and has been a consultant to HAI on projects related to pharmaceutical promotion and rational member use since. She is a member of the HAI/World Health Organization team to develop model curriculum for medical and pharmacy students on drug promotion. She has worked for many years with women’s health and consumer groups, and is a member of the Steering group of Women and Health Protection, a Canadian non-profit group.
